History of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts

The town of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts grew as a suburb to Worcester (pronounced "wuh-stah"). Named after Shrewsbury, England it's landscape is hilly with many minor streams. As a town, Shrewsbury was originally settled in 1722 and officially incorporated in 1727. Prior to the Revolutionary war Shrewsbury's economy was based on agriculture, but following the war and the economic hardships that followed, a leather industry grew and local farmers developed large cattle herds to support the manufacture of boots and shoes.

Single-family housing grew up around the development of the streetcar routes. A summer resort population on Lake Quinsigamond became consumers of the market garden produce grown by town farmers. As Shrewsbury's industry was killed off by the lack of large waterpower sites and the late arrival of the railroad, its role as a suburb of Worcester grew more important.

The economy of modern Shrewsbury depends on agriculture, the resort industry and providing recreation and food for the population of Worcester.

Location: Central Massachusetts. Bordered by Worcester, Boylston, Grafton, Northborough, Westborough, and West Boylston.
