History of Worcester, Massachusetts

Worcester (pronounced "wuh-stah") is the second largest city in New England behind Boston. The original inhabitants of the area were the Pakachoag tribe of the Nipmuc nation of Native Americans. They called the area Quinsigamond which means "fishing place for pickerel." Mount Wachusett was their sacred place.

In 1673 the first English settlers arrived and built a modest settlement of six or seven houses. This small settlement was destroyed in 1675 and subsequently resettled and incorporated in 1684. It was in that year that a change in name was petitioned from Quinsigamond to Worcester, after the historic city of Worcester, England.  In 1722 Worcester was incorporated as a town and in 1848, chartered as a city.

Worcester and the nearby Blackstone Valley are considered to be the birthplace of the industrial revolution due to their innovation in commerce, industry and education. Women found economic opportunity in Worcester as early entrepreneurs.

Today, it's fine mill era Victorian Architecture is home to a diverse population.
